NCRP x OB Curriculum

A Reproductive Mental Health Curriculum Designed for Obstetric Care Providers

Who Is This Curriculum For?

NCRP x OB is designed for clinicians and learners involved in obstetric care, including:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology residents
  • Obstetrician-gynecologists
  • Maternal-fetal medicine specialists and fellows
  • Family medicine physicians providing obstetric care
  • Certified nurse-midwives
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • Medical students and other health professions learners

The curriculum is especially suited for OB/GYN residency programs seeking to integrate reproductive mental health education into their longitudinal didactic curriculum.

The NCRP x OB Curriculum is an adaptation of the National Curriculum in Reproductive Psychiatry (NCRP) created specifically for obstetric care providers. This curriculum brings foundational principles of reproductive psychiatry into the OB/GYN clinical setting, providing concise, accessible, and evidence-based education on core topics in perinatal mental health.

Developed by an interdisciplinary working group of reproductive psychiatrists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, obstetrician-gynecologists, midwives, and medical educators, NCRP x OB was designed to address the unique educational needs of clinicians caring for pregnant and postpartum patients.

The curriculum equips obstetric providers with practical skills to recognize, assess, and manage common perinatal mental health conditions while emphasizing evidence-based treatment, shared decision-making, trauma-informed care, and collaboration with behavioral health specialists.

How Can NCRP x OB Be Used?

The NCRP x OB Curriculum is designed for flexible implementation across a variety of educational settings.

Programs may use the curriculum for:

  • OB/GYN residency didactic conferences
  • Faculty development
  • Continuing medical education (CME)
  • Medical student education
  • Interprofessional education
  • Self-directed learning

Each module is designed to stand alone and may be completed independently. Programs offering the curriculum as a lecture series may follow the recommended sequence below, which progresses from foundational clinical concepts to increasingly complex conditions and psychiatric emergencies.

National Curriculum in Reproductive Psychiatry for OB-GYN

The NCRP x OB Course for Facilitators offers comprehensive training across ten modules covering perinatal mental health topics.

Description

The OBX Course for Facilitators offers comprehensive training across ten modules covering perinatal mental health topics—from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and trauma to substance use, perinatal loss, psychiatric emergencies, and capacity assessment—equipping facilitators to confidently teach evidence-based assessment and management of psychiatric conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Suggested Learning Sequence

Foundations of Perinatal Mental Health Care

1. Overall Clinical Approach to the Treatment of the Peripartum Patient

Establish a framework for psychiatric assessment and evidence-based treatment planning during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This module emphasizes shared decision-making and balanced risk–risk counseling that considers the potential consequences of both untreated mental illness and treatment exposure.

Common Perinatal Mental Health Conditions

2. Perinatal Depression for OB-GYN Providers

Review the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, screening, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of perinatal depression. Learners will develop confidence in identifying depression and initiating appropriate first-line management.

3. Perinatal Anxiety Disorders and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Learn to recognize and differentiate generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder from expected perinatal anxiety. This module focuses on assessment, treatment approaches, common clinical challenges, and referral considerations.

4. Bipolar Disorder for OB-GYN Providers

Understand the impact of bipolar disorder on maternal and obstetric outcomes. This module equips clinicians to recognize bipolar disorder, appreciate associated risks during pregnancy and postpartum, and understand key treatment considerations.

Trauma, Loss, and Complex Clinical Care

5. Trauma and the Perinatal Period

Explore the relationship between trauma, pregnancy, and postpartum mental health. Learners will develop skills in recognizing trauma histories and PTSD while applying trauma-informed approaches to patient care.

6. Perinatal Loss

Examine the mental health impact of pregnancy and infant loss. This module provides a compassionate clinical framework for distinguishing normal grief from depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric presentations while supporting patients through loss.

7. Management of Alcohol, Opioid, and Other Substance Use During Pregnancy

Review the prevalence, risk factors, and maternal and fetal impacts of substance use disorders during pregnancy. Learners will explore evidence-based approaches to treatment, harm reduction, recovery support, and relapse prevention.

Psychiatric Emergencies and Advanced Clinical Decision-Making

8. Suicide Risk and Agitation

Develop skills to identify suicide risk, conduct acute psychiatric assessments, determine appropriate levels of care, and manage agitation in perinatal patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies.

9. Psychosis and Mania

Recognize postpartum psychosis and mania as psychiatric emergencies requiring immediate assessment and intervention. This module covers risk factors, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and treatment considerations.

10. Capacity in Pregnancy

Explore the principles of decision-making capacity during pregnancy, including when capacity assessment is indicated, how capacity can be evaluated and supported, and considerations for surrogate decision-making.

Curriculum Development Team

The NCRP x OB Curriculum was developed through a collaborative effort of experts in reproductive psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, midwifery, and medical education.

The curriculum development team adapted the National Curriculum in Reproductive Psychiatry to create an accessible, clinically relevant resource specifically designed for obstetric care providers.
