Welcome to NCRP x OB! We are so glad you are here. We hope you find these educational materials useful. NCRP x OB is an adaptation of the original NCRP reproductive psychiatry curriculum with the OB provider in mind. Developed by an expert working group including reproductive psychiatrists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and general OB/GYNs, the NCRP x OB modules provide concise, accessible, and evidence-based educational materials to teach core topics in perinatal mental health.

These modules are designed to be used either within an educational program or self-guided and can be accessed in any order.

MODULE OBJECTIVES

  1. Develop an approach to psychiatric assessment in the perinatal period.
  2. Discuss risks associated with untreated depression in pregnancy and postpartum.
  3. Practice risk-risk discussions in pregnancy with a focus on depression management.
  4. Appreciate unique factors in the management of perinatal depression in the context of risks of both medications and untreated psychiatric illness.

  2. Explain the obstetric and psychiatric impact of perinatal depression
  3. Identify possible etiologies of perinatal depression
  4. Discuss the diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis of perinatal depression
  5. Discuss first-line treatment options for perinatal depression
MODULE OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe the prevalence, risk factors, and screening methods for bipolar disorder 
  2. Explain the obstetric and psychiatric impact of bipolar disorder
  3. Discuss the diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis of bipolar disorder
  4. Discuss first-line treatment options for bipolar disorder
MODULE OBJECTIVES

  1. Recognize the clinical presentations of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and OCD in pregnancy 
  2. Differentiate clinical anxiety disorders in pregnancy from “normal” anxiety/worry in pregnancy 
  3. Differentiate between GAD and OCD 
  4. Differentiate between OCD and Postpartum Psychosis 
  5. Gain comfort with initiating treatment, avoiding treatment pitfalls, and when to refer to a specialist

MODULE OBJECTIVES

  1. Define the incidence of trauma in reproductive-aged women
  2. Recognize risk and protective factors for trauma in a perinatal patient
  3. Understand the screening tools and diagnostic criteria for experiences of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 
  4. Learn common clinical presentations and differential diagnoses of trauma disorders in a perinatal patient
  5. Understand the biological, psychological and social factors which contribute to the pathophysiology of PTSD
  6. Learn evidence-based recommendations of PTSD treatment, including pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and psychotherapeutic modalities

  1. Develop an understanding of the mental health impact of perinatal loss
  2. Discuss the clinical approach to mental health impact of the patient with perinatal loss 
  3. Appreciate unique factors in the management of perinatal loss as it relates to normal grief, anxiety, depression and other acute psychiatric presentations

MODULE OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand the prevalence and risk factors of substance use disorders in the perinatal period with a focus on alcohol and opioid use
  2. Discuss the effects of substance use disorders on pregnancies and offspring, including biological and psychiatric impacts.
  3. Understand evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders and prevention strategies for relapse.

  1. Identify prevalence of suicide in postpartum patients
  2. Describe risk factors for suicide
  3. Learn how to assess a patient’s acute suicide risk
  4. Identify appropriate level of care for a patient
  5. Learn how to manage agitation

  1. Identify prevalence, risk factors and screening for postpartum psychosis (PPP)
  2. Identify clinical features of PPP, mania, and other psychotic illnesses 
  3. Describe the differential diagnosis for PPP
  4. Learn how to assess and treat PPP

  1. Understand the basic concepts and 4 core components of capacity
  2. Determine which clinical scenarios require different levels of capacity
  3. Understand ways in which capacity can be restored
  4. Determine surrogate decision maker in scenarios in which capacity cannot be restored
